Two themes stand out as one examines 20th century British drama. The first is that the century witnessed a growing sense that the theatre was not an aristocratic pleasure ground, but a democratic forum for all. The second theme is the changing role of women. From the beginning of the century in the works of G.B. Shaw to the end of the century with its 'post-feminist' theatre, this theme has absorbed dramatists. This book aims to relate 20th century British drama to its historical, cultural and social contexts, not to imply that plays emerge naturally to mirror the society from which they spring, but rather that an understanding of context enhances the understanding and enjoyment of drama.
