Media Session
Media Reframed - a refreshed and rebooted teaching and learning approach with Ben Hoban
Ben will look at the new VCE Media Study Design and how Media Reframed provides students with an approach to the media in line with their own experience of it. A new emphasis on digital media technologies provides an in-depth analysis of making media in a new environment while still celebrating a century of storytelling techniques. Theoretical case studies ranging from the cinema to the smartphone screen allow students to examine the role of narrative construction, representation and ideology in a context relevant to them. Ben will also cover the skills-based activities focus used in this new resource.
Agency and control in and of the media with David Caust
In Media Reframed, students will take a fresh approach to the study of agency and control in and of the media; examining the role of the old and new theories of influence in a modern context of global media institutions and the many millions of media creators.
Product Design and Technology session:
The importance of user-feedback with Zowie Moselen
Feedback from the end user/s is a vital aspect of Product Design and Technology. Feedback can take many forms and can help designers create better products by listening to who will be using the product. Teaching students the role of feedback and how to use it effectively helps them to create a product that is more likely to meet the end user/s needs and wants.
Understanding the consumer with Joanne Heide
An empathetic approach to design helps designers create better innovations, services and quality of life. Teaching VCE Product Design & Technology students this approach enables them to understand and experience their role as a designer in a real world context and better meet the needs and wants of the end user/s they are designing for.
Visual Communication Design session
Design Thinking with Jacinta Patterson
Design thinking is a critical element to the study of Visual Communication Design. It underpins the design process and is part of Units 1 - 4. Design thinking assists students in the processes of thinking creatively, critically and reflectively. This session provides an introductory session on incorporating design thinking into your Visual Communication Design classes with demonstrations, notes and student handouts.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Ben Hoban is a teacher of VCE Media and History and has been teaching both subjects at Cheltenham Secondary College since 2009. He is the leading teacher of ICT at the school, and a passionate advocate for innovative learning and digital literacy. Outside of education, Ben has been widely published in design, pop culture and action sports media.
David Caust began teaching VCE Media at Taylors Lakes Secondary College in 1997, where he was also eLearning Leader for many years. He currently teaches VCE Studio Arts (Photography) and middle years Visual and Media Arts. David has a special interest in art theory and philosophy, and maintains his own studio practice in painting and photography.
Zowie Moselen B.CI (Visual Arts), B.Ed (Secondary), Zowie is a VCE Product Design and Technology (Textiles) teacher at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College. She has been teaching for 7 years in various schools in Queensland and Victoria. Zowie also teaches Junior Textiles, Media studies and Visual Communication and Design. She is an avid crafter who loves teaching students the skills needed to bring their own ideas to life.
Joanne Heide Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts), Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art, Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) and Master of Fine Art, Joanne has been a secondary teacher since 1999 and on obtaining her teaching degree taught Product Design & Technology in the United Kingdom for eight years. She has headed both Technology and Art Departments and has been teaching Product Design (Resistant Materials), Art and Visual Communication Design to years 7-12 students at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Melbourne since 2011. She has also taught years 7 and 8 Systems Technology, and is Vice President of the Design and Technology Teachers Association of Victoria (DATTA VIC)..
Jacinta Patterson is an experienced Visual Communication Design teacher who has taught in a variety of independent and Catholic secondary schools. She is currently the Head of Art and Design at The Ivanhoe Grammar School. Jacinta has significant experience with curriculum development and design including working in the roles of Panel Chair and Chief Assessor for the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). She is an active member of Visual Communication Victoria (VCD Teachers Association), presenting at both their Units1–4 seminars and annual conferences. Jacinta has assisted in running presentations for teachers on the Unit 3 and 4 folio for the VCAA and is actively involved with the Top Designs program..
Each delegate will receive one complimentary textbook (either Cambridge VCE Product Design and Technology, Media Reframed VCE Units 1-4 or Viscomm Second Edition: A Guide to V) for attending. These will be provided upon publication. Limit 2 per school.
