Spotlight on Community and Family Studies: Part 2
Kelly Bell and Kate Rayner, authors of the new HSC Checkpoints Community and Family Studies study guide, explore the importance of CAFS to today’s secondary students.
Community and Family Studies (CAFS) is a HSC subject that covers a diverse range of issues affecting the lives of all individuals and their unique roles in groups, families and communities in the 21st Century.
CAFS explores the importance of a variety of groups including school, family, community organisations and government agencies who work together to support the needs of individuals within the community. As students develop into active, adult citizens, their interaction with these groups becomes very important to the future society we are building.
It is a subject that challenges students to develop critical thinking skills in research, resource management, decision-making, goal setting, conflict resolution, communication, problem solving, leadership, relationship building, advocacy and safe technology use.
CAFS is not only a subject that is highly relevant to their lives both now and in the future, but is also an area that students find highly enjoyable as it challenges them cognitively, emotionally and socially. Students feel that they are able to become meaningful members of their community and contribute to the betterment of their own communities by studying this subject.
